Karl Priebe, born in Milwaukee, Wisconsin in 1914, is often considered a Surrealist, but was known for his diverse work. He first studied at the Layton Art School in Milwaukee, and then at the Art Institute of Chicago. He worked in the Anthropology department of the Milwaukee Public Museum as part of the WPA during the depression, before moving on to the position of Director of the Kalamazoo Art Museum, and finally returning to Layton as an instructor in 1947. His paintings of African American culture, as well as birds and exotic animals, proved to be popular and he was featured in Life magazine in 1947. Priebe’s work was widely exhibited during his lifetime, including at the Milwaukee Art Museum, the Corcoran Gallery, Museum of Modern Art, and the Art Institute of Chicago.
