French painter Philippe Auge is known for his seemingly quiet, dreamlike paintings of figures draped in diaphanous robes, sensuous florals and still lifes filled with fleshy fruit, all rendered with slight surrealistic undertones and a finely tuned sense of color. While still a teenager, Auge left Paris to travel through Italy and Greece where he studied the Renaissance masters. While in Rome he worked with scenic designer Guillo Coltellaci before returning to Paris and enrolling at the Ecole des Beaux-Arts for a short period. There he met George Braque who would become a lasting influence and mentor. His first solo exhibition was in London in 1959, and since he has widely exhibited throughout the U.S. and Europe and been the recipient of numerous awards.
