Gonzalo Endara Crow was born in Bucay, Ecuador in 1936. After showing an interest in art from an early age, he studied painting at the Central University in Quito. Until the 20th century much of the art in Latin America merely imitated that of Europe, but after the Russian and Mexican revolutions South and Central American artists began to develop an original Latin American style. Crow, inspired by Ecuadorian geography and the colorful work of indigenous artists, was part of that movement. His work is often labeled magical realism, incorporating myth, magic and natural phenomena with a realistic painting style.
