William Goadby Lawrence was born in New Jersey in 1913, and after showing interest in art from a young age, studied at the Art Students League in New York. He then served as a combat artist and chief boatswain’s mate in the United States Coast Guard during World War II, before continuing his career as an illustrator. Lawrence’s work was published in prominent magazines, including Field and Stream and The Saturday Evening Post, as well as several books including Salt Water Fishing by Van Campen Heilner’s and Saltwater Game Fishing of the World by Bob Dunn and Peter Goadby. His work resides in the permanent collections of the Library of Congress, the Museum of Natural History, and the U.S. Coast Guard Academy Museum.
