Jacques Stephan Witjens, born in 1881 in The Hague, Netherlands, was mostly a self taught artist, though he did work with fellow artist August Allebé to develop his style. He was awarded first prize at the Concurso Bignelli in 1912, and successfully exhibited his art in the Netherlands before emigrating to Argentina in 1920. There he experimented with palette knife paintings of the local landscape and widely exhibited his work.
