Eugene ‘Gene’ Friley received his BFA and MFA at Ohio State University and taught in the ceramics program for more than forty years. He began as a ceramic engineering student, but his studies were put on hold when he served in the Air Force as a B-29 bombardier in World War II-Pacific Theatre. After the war, he finished his degree in ceramic arts, then joined the Ohio State faculty. Particularly inspired by nature, referring to it as his ‘prime teacher’, Friley is known for his public art, garden sculptures, and fountains often featuring playful organic designs and humorous content. More recently, he has worked in plaster and concrete and some of his monumental pieces can be four to six feet tall.
