Japanese-Made Silk Trapunto Embroidered American Patriotic Banner, circa 1908

A hand-embroidered silk banner made in Japan as a souvenir for the American Navy sailors during the Great White Fleet tour of the early 20th century. This piece is made in the style of the George Washington Company of Yokohama. On a satin ground, padded trapunto embroidery depicts the Federal eagle with a glass eye, holding arrows and surrounded by olive branches, shield, American flags, and a banner reading ‘E Pluribus Unum’. Throughout the composition are 46 stars, consistent witbh the 46 United States in the year 1908. The piece is framed with hanging wire to the verso.

- wrinkles throughout; silk ground embrittlement with creases and slight loss of ground; glass eye is cracked; loose and broken stitching throughout; accretion beneath glass; stains and discoloration throughout testile; scuffs, marks, and edge wear to frame, with separation of corner joins; tears to paper verso backing.
