Gertrude Beals Bourne was born and raised in Boston’s Back Bay area. She began her artistic studies in her early 20s with Henry Rice, student of Ross Turner, and during the 1910s with Henry Snell, a founding member of the New York Watercolor Club. Her work was greatly influenced by her travels in Europe with her family during the 1890s, and she had her first exhibition at the prestigious Boston Art Club in 1892, where she exhibited regularly through 1905. Until she was 88 years old, she showed her work at the Corcoran Gallery, the Art Institute of Chicago, Washington Water Color Club, American Watercolor Society, the New York Watercolor Club, the National Association of Women Painters and Sculptors, the Baltimore Watercolor Club, the Brooklyn Museum, James Newman Galleries, London, and the Pennsylvania Academy of Fine Arts, among others. Bourne’s works are represented in the collections of numerous prestigious institutions, including the Corcoran Gallery; the Museum of Fine Arts, Boston; Smithsonian American Art Museum; the Brockton Art Museum; Danforth Museum of Art; the Peabody Essex Museum; and the Currier Gallery of Art.
