Charles Hine, an American artist known for his portrait and figure paintings was born in Bethany, Connecticut in 1827, and was raised in New Haven. At the age of fifteen he began studying art under George Whiting Flagg (1816 – 1897) and continued under George’s younger brother, Jared Bradley Flagg (1820 – 1899). Hine remained in Connecticut until 1857, when he moved to New York City.

Condition
- discoloration to varnish layer; craquelure throughout paint; overpainting restoration indicated under UV light, scattered throughout, including to forehead and chin of sitter; patch repeairs to canvas at right side and center, visible to verso and as raised areas to paint on recto; slight buckle to canvas, with corner keys inserted in stretchers; edge and finish wear to frame.
