Notable American artist John Henry Hill came from a family of distinguished artists, including his father, John William Hill, who co-founded the American Watercolor Society, and grandfather John Hill, an English engraver. He was born and raised in West Nyack, New York where he studied painting and etching with his father. He is associated with the White Mountain and Hudson River Schools, and often painted the lakes and mountains of New Hampshire and New York, counting John Ruskin and David Johnson as influences in their portrayal of nature. In 1868 he traveled and painted throughout the American West, completing many large oils of his adventure upon his return. Hill exhibited at many prestigious venues, including the National Academy of Design, The Brooklyn Academy of Art, and the Pennsylvania Academy of Fine Arts, and his work resides in the permanent collections of the National Gallery of Art and the Smithsonian American Art Museum in Washington, D.C., the Indianapolis Museum of Art and the Adirondack Museum in New York.
