From the estate of Dr. Will Thompson, Dallas, Texas.

Charles Percy Austin was a painter, illustrator, poster designer, and muralist known for his Southern California landscapes. He studied under William Henry Read at the Denver School of Art and John Henry Twachtman at the Art Students League in New York. After school and study in Europe, Austin moved to the West Coast, settling in Southern California and moving into Granville Redmond’s former studio in Santa Monica. He was inspired by the local landscapes and captured the California coasts, deserts, and mountains in a number of his works. Austin became particularly known for his paintings of Mission San Juan Capistrano, where he spent a great deal of time. He painted Mary Pickford’s wedding there and was invited to illustrate the book Capistrano Nights. Several of Austin’s works can be found in the Mission’s permanent collection as well as in the collections of the Irvine Museum and the Bowers Museum, and murals at Our Lady of Mount Carmel Church in Montecito and Saint Peter’s Church in Los Angeles.
