Bessie Hoover Wessel, and her husband Herman Wessel were prominent figures in the Cincinnati, Ohio art scene in the 20th century. Born in Brookville, Indiana in 1889, Bessie Wessel moved to with her family to Cincinnati as a child. She studied at the Cincinnati Art Academy with Lewis Henry Meakin, and with her future husband Herman Wessel, before finally joining the classes of Frank Duveneck. She frequently exhibited her work, including portraits, still lifes, landscape and miniatures painted on ivory. She was on the faculty of the Art Academy for a brief period, and served as the president of the Women’s Art Club from 1917 to 1919.
