Untitled (autumn landscape with mill), late 19th century
Oil painting on canvas
Signed to the lower left
Painting in the manner of the Hudson River Valley School, Henry W. Kemper settled in Cincinnati around 1850 where his Ohio River Valley oil landscapes gained traction in the art community. Sharing a studio with celebrated portrait and genre painter James H. Beard, Kemper showed pieces at the Closson & Timber-Lake Picture Gallery and later at the Ohio Mechanics Institute. Traveling extensively during his career through both the eastern United States and Latin America, Kemper’s landscapes never strayed far from the Ohio River Valley, where he died in 1894. Kemper was sold at auction by Christies in 1999 and has been purchased by a number of private collectors since.
