American landscape painter Eugene Leslie Smythe was born in New York in 1857. He attended Brown University, and studied painting under Francis Davis Millet (1846 – 1912), George Inness (1825 – 1894), and Dwight William Tryon (1849 – 1925). He exhibited regularly at the Boston Arts Club, and was a member of the Providence Art Club. He also painted in California for a brief period. Smythe’s work resides in the collections of Brown University Gardner House, Providence Art Club, Rhode Island School of Design, and the Santa Fe Railway Collection among others.

- negligible wear to the frame with discoloration and many scratches to the paint; toning to the canvas; impact craquelure to the canvas visible to the the front and verso.
