A limited edition giclée on photo paper by South African photographer Rodney Nissen-Petzer. This work features Nigerian-British actor, director, and fashion model Adewale Akinnuoye-Agbaje, or ‘Wale’, with whom Nissen-Petzer became good friends. The photograph was originally shot in the late 1990s for the popular London jewelry company Butler & Wilson, whose jewelry was favored by Princess Diana, Kate Moss, and Sharon Stone. The company was known for its traffic-stopping billboards featured at their single store Fulham Road boutique. At this store, the company would display two billboards that were as tall as the storefront windows. For these billboards, the founders hired the top fashion photographers in London to shoot more conceptual photos, such as this, instead of producing ads through an advertising agency. This particular work was one of the billboards featured on the side of the building alongside another one also shot by Nissen-Petzer, who was hired to shoot five sets of billboards for Butler & Wilson. Some other photographers who shot for the company include David Bailey, Terrence Donovan, and Robert Mapplethorpe. Several celebrities were featured in the billboards, such as Jerry Hall, Faye Dunaway, and Bianca Jagger, to name a few.
The subject of this work, ‘Wale’, began his career as a model in Milan. He went on to act in several films and television shows, such as Game of Thrones, Lost, The Bourne Identity, Thor, and the Suicide Squad, among others. He is currently still acting, but also writing and directing.
Rodney Nissen-Petzer obtained his photography degree in South Africa at Durban University of Technology. In addition to South Africa, he has spent his career working in London and the United States. Previously, his agent in London was Martyn Creed at M+M Management (now at Sarah Kaye). Throughout his career, Nissen-Petzer has worked with a number of respected fashion editors and photographers such as Iain R. Webb for The Times in London, Caroline Baker for You magazine, Michael Roberts for Tatler, Horst P. Horst, and Clive Arrowsmith. He has also photographed numerous well known models and celebrities, including Alexa Singer, Naomi Campbell, Erin O’Connor, Rachel Boss, Christina Aguilera, and Jennifer Lopez. He also photographed Tara Fitzgerald for British Vogue and Francesca Annis for London Portrait Magazine. Some notable companies he has worked for are Vidal Sassoon, Butler & Wilson, and The World Gold Council.
