Born in Philadelphia, Edmund Darch Lewis has been regarded as one of the most prolific and successful American landscape artists of the late 19th century. He studied privately with Paul Weber beginning at age fifteen. Highly sought after, Lewis’ work often features scenes of the Lehigh, Susquehana, and Wissahickon Rivers of Pennsylvania, and rural scenes of northeast United States. Many of his marine and landscape paintings include hidden cottages, churning mills, and schooners drifting in calm waters. During his career, Lewis exhibited at the Pennsylvania Academy of the Fine Arts where he was elected an Associate, the National Academy of Design, the Boston Athenaeum, and the Brooklyn Art Association. His work has been collected by multiple institutions including the Worcester Art Museum, the Frederic Remington Art Museum, the Mobile Museum of Art, and the the National Cowboy and Western Heritage Museum, among others.

- canvas lined; craquelure and accretion across painting surface; yellowing to pigments; minor areas of overpainting touchups throughout sky area near edges and scattered throughout composition; small indentation (less than a quarter of an inch) in sky area to upper right; wear to frame including discoloration, cracking, minor loss along interior edge, accretion and abrasions.
