Helen Gapen Oehler is known for her landscapes and seascapes, as well as scenes from her travels, all painted in an impressionistic style with great attention to color. She was born in 1893 in Ottawa Illinois and studied art and teaching at the University of Illinois. She went on to study at the School of the Art Institute of Chicago, graduating with honors, and then continued her studies with Jules Lefevre in Paris, and worked in the studios of George Elmer Browne in Provincetown and New York. After marrying, and then teaching and painting in Chicago, Connecticut and New Jersey, she settled with her husband in California in 1950, where she was active in the art scene of Carmel. She was a member of numerous arts organizations, including American Artists Professional League, National Association of Women Artists, Provincetown Art Association, American Watercolor Society, Allied Artists of America and more. Her work was widely exhibited in prestigious institutions, including the National Academy of Design, New York;
Salon D’Automne, Paris; the 1945 World Fair; De Young Museum and the Palace of Fine Arts, San Francisco; Art Institute of Dayton, Ohio; High Museum, Atlanta Georgia; Pacific Grove Art Center and Museum and many more.
