Harold ‘Napoleon’ King was born in Miami, Florida in 1940, and grew up with his large family in Florida, New Jersey, and New York. He earned his nickname from his high school classmates, for his grand ambitions, and after school went to Greenwich Village in New York to work on his artistic skills. Completely self taught, with his natural talent and hard work he quickly developed his own dramatic style with charcoal and pastels, which he deemed ‘Napoleonic Impressionism’. In 1970 King moved to New Orleans, where he immediately felt at home in the vibrant street art scene of the French Quarter, painting portraits of the locals and the tourists, often dressed in flamboyant clothing and accompanied by his pet rabbits.
