In a style that appears inspired by the Pre-Raphaelites, this piece depicts the Greco-Roman dieties Aphrodite (Venus), Ares (Mars), and Athena (Minerva).
Condition
- scattered craquelure; minor discoloration to varnish; extensive overpainting present throughout work, including the entirety of Athena’s face and much of Aphrodite’s, with other overpainted details indicated under UV examination; in addition to overpainting, areas of work have had original paint scraped away and re-filled, with variations in the thickness and surface level of the painting throughout, notably to the area of and surrounding the signature surname, with filled signature blurred and illegible; chips and cracks to frame gesso, with additional scratches, scuffs, and edge wear to frame; discoloration to canvas verso.
