Walter Marion Greer, a South Carolina native born in 1920, was the first artist to establish a permanent home on the island of Hilton Head, and he spent his career painting its scenery. He earned two Bachelor of Science degrees, the first from The Citadel, and the second from Clemson University. In 1960 he studied with Ben Shute at the Atlanta School of Art, and then with Robert Phillipp at the National Academy of Design in New York. Greer’s work has been widely exhibited throughout the Southeast, and resides in the collections of the South Carolina Governor’s Mansion, Emory University, the Gibbes Museum in Charleston, and the Greenville County Museum. The Arts Center of Coastal Carolina named its exhibition hall The Walter Greer Gallery in his honor in 1996.
