Helen Stein, born in Odessa, Russia, immigrated with her family to the US at the age of two, where they settled in New York. She studied at both the Art Students League in New York, and The Cooper Union in New York. She spent a brief period working in Paris, before returning to New York and becoming an active, exhibiting member of the Society of Independent Artists. She became a close friend of Marsden Hartley (1877 – 1943), and painted a portrait of him in 1932. Eventually Stein settled in Massachusetts where she was active in both the Gloucester and Rockport artistic communities.

- discoloration to painting surface; blooming varnish and surface abrasions throughout painting; outward bow to board; accretion to painting surface; pin holes clustered near corners; edge wear to frame; edge wear to paperboard visible to verso.
