Mississippi born William H. Atkins first studied fine art at the University of New Mexico. For a brief stint, Atkins studied with the Taos group which included artists Oscar Berninghaus, Randall Davey, and Kenneth Adams. Despite possible influences, Atkins maintained his oeuvre of hued-filled landscape paintings with a small collection of figural pieces. He continued to paint while teaching for the better part of two decades, before devoting himself solely to his art in his retirement. His work is collected in various public and private collections.
