Arthur Paul Hogarth, an illustrator known for his book covers, was born in 1917, in North West England. He moved to Manchester at the age of six, and eventually attended the Manchester School of Art, and later the Saint Martin’s School of Art in London. He studied illustration with James Boswell, and worked with numerous authors including Graham Greene, William Golding, Robert Graves, John Wyndham, Laurence Durrell and Brendan Behan. He was elected a full member to the Royal Academy of Arts in 1984, and was awarded the Order of the British Empire in 1989.

- light scratches around edges of the frame; discoloration to the matting; toning to the paper; paper is torn to the upper right corner; paper covering verso is slightly ripped in places.
