Ernest Fiene was born in Elberfeld, Germany in 1894 but fled to the Netherlands, followed by the United States in 1912 to avoid being drafted in the military. From 1914-1923 Fiene studied at various New York institutions including National Academy of Design, Beaux Arts Institute, and the Art Students League. Celebrated for his lyrical modernism focusing on color and shape, Fiene was invited to show at the Whitney Studio Club in 1923. Moving to Paris for two years in the late 1920’s he was awarded the Guggenheim Fellowship for his work completed there which allowed him to study mural painting in Italy. Returning to the United States, Fiene was employed by the Associated American Artists, Art Students League and finally awarded full professorship at the National academy of Design in 1952. His work is held in a number of private collections throughout the United States.
