Kristin Nelson was an American Primitive painter, actor, and author, and sister to actor Mark Harmon. Nelson began painting at seventeen after President Kennedy’s assassination moved her to paint When the Kennedys were in the White House. Her painting career took a back seat to her acting career when, after her 1963 marriage to actor and musician Ricky Nelson, she joined the cast of the family television show The Adventures of Ozzie & Harriet. Nelson rekindled her passion for painting in the late 1980s, and it continued to be her main focus throughout her life. Her brightly colored paintings are notable for their flattened perspective, often depicting many figures, and have been likened to works by Primitive artist Grandma Moses. Nelson came into national prominence when a painting of the White House was purchased by former First Lady Jacqueline Kennedy. A full size coffee table book of Nelson’s paintings titled Out Of My Mind was published in 1999.
