Sir Francis Grant (1803-1878) is a Scottish portrait painter famous for painting Queen Victoria amount many other British aristocrats as well as for serving as president of the Royal Art Academy. Grant, originally seeking to become a lawyer, was largely self – taught, a feat he achieved by copying the works of Velasquez and other masters. In 1834 Grant exhibited a pictured titled ‘The Melton Breakfast’ (engraved by Charles G. Lewis) at the Royal Academy earning him acclaim from critics. During the following 40 years Grant became the most sought out portrait painter in Great Britain due to his elegant and stylized depictions. Today his paintings are held by many acclaimed institutions such as the Leeds Museum and Galleries, Trinity College, and The University of Oxford, amount many others.

Condition

- frame in negligible condition with many chips; paper is very discolored by age and exhibits frequent foxing; ink is very faded; paper covering the frame to the verso is broken and cracking.
