Item Details

Bror Alexander Utter (American, Texas, 1913 – 1993)
Untitled (landscape), 1963
Watercolor on paper
Signed and dated to lower right

Grandson of a Finnish artist, Bror Utter began his artistic studies under the artists Ella Ray Ledgerwood and Sallie Gillespie. He moved on to attend the Fort Worth School of Fine Arts while maintaining a job working at his father’s lithographic printing company. While Utter’s early work drew from scenes of everyday life and regional landscapes, after his studies at the Colorado Springs Fine Arts Center his style evolved into an “organic, biomorphic abstraction.” He began teaching a number of courses at the Texas Wesleyan College and the Fort Worth Art Center, but still worked full-time as a painter. His work is collected by numerous private and public collections.
