Edward Hicks is a 19th Century Quaker folk artist celebrated for his peaceful depictions of animals, mythology and history painting. Born and orphaned in Bucks County, Pennsylvania, Hicks was apprenticed to Coach makers William and Henry Tomlinson where he learned ornamental painting. Hicks went on to become a minister and later opened his own ornamental painting shop. Both Idyllic religious themes and lettering techniques he employed in his commercial painting are evident in his work. Held today in the Philadelphia Museum of Art, Hicks’ self taught compositions have received national acclaim.
