Zao Wou-Ki is one of the most recognized Chinese painters known for his non-objective gestural works that often have a soft, dream-like ambiance. Born in Beijing, he studied at the Chinese Academy of Art in Zhejiang Province where he became a drawing instructor in 1941. He moved to Paris in 1947 befriending Alberto Giacometti and Joan Miro and was a member of the Académie des Beaux-Arts. He was quickly recognized as a leading abstract expressionist and frequently traveled to New York seeking inspiration from Western artists and exploring new forms of expressionism. Zao Wou-Ki’s work has been shown in solo exhibitions world-wide and can be found in many international museums including the Museum of Modern Art, New York; Solomon R. Guggenheim, New York; Musée National d’Art Moderne, Paris; Musée Royaux des Beaux-Arts, Brussels; and the Hong Kong Museum of Art amongst many others.
