Born on a farm near Kalida, Emerson Burkhart studied at Ohio Wesleyan University, the Art Student’s League and later took instruction from painter Charles Hawthorne (1872-1930). Eventually, he settled in Columbus, Ohio and was an early member of the Ohio Art League. Burkhart was awarded two commissions from the WPA Federal Art Project to create murals at Central High School and at the Ohio State University. Known as an American Scene painter, Burkhart mastered impressionist, post-impressionist, and realist styles in his best known works of portraits, city scenes of Columbus OH, and harbor seascapes.

- minor scuffing and accretions to paint, most visibly at the upper left region; minor scratching, scuffing, discoloration, and accretions to frame.
