Francis Stillwell Dixon was born to a prominent New York family in 1879. He studied with Robert Henri at the Art Students League in New York City as well as with Charles Hawthorne in Cape Cod. Dixon exhibited his work at many prestigious institutions including The Corcoran Gallery of Art in Washington, DC and the Folson Gallery, the Society of Independent Artists, the Salmagundi Club, and the National Academy of Design in New York, among others. He was a member of Allied Artists of America, the Connecticut Academy of Fine Arts and the Salmagundi Club.
