An oil illustration of a boy fishing by artist Duane Bryers. This painting is the original work that was published in the 1973 New Champ calendar. The image was featured in the calendar for the month of March.
Born in Virginia, Minnesota, Duane Bryers earned his first major commissioned work painting a mural that depicting the mining history of that area, earning him $3,000. With his newfound wealth, he traveled to New York City, hoping to achieve artistic fame. While fame was not immediately obtained, he continued to earn commissions and won several contests, including a poster contest for The Museum of Modern Art. He stuck with commercial art for a significant while, until he moved to Arizona and became interested in portraying genre scenes of the American West. Easily his most popular works, he achieved success as an artist with these works, earning vast recognition and many awards. He lived a long life, passing away one month before turning 101. His works are represented in the collections of numerous prestigious institutions, including National Cowboy & Western Heritage Museum; Pearce Collections Museum; Rockwell Museum of Western Art; The Arizona Historical Society, Southern Arizona Division; and the Tucson Museum of Art.
