Alling MacKaye Clements, born in Rochester, New York, started out as a free lance artist, while also working on theatrical scene and sign painting. During the 1930s, he spent summers in Maine painting with Charles Woodbury. He was a member of the Rochester Art Club, where he was also president for three years, and the Rochester Print Club, as well as many other organizations.
