Considered an important figure among contemporary African American artists, Humbert Howard studied at Howard University in Washington, D.C., the University of Pennsylvania in Philadelphia, and the Barnes Foundation in Merion, Pennsylvania. He was known for his expressionistic compositions that often exhibited abstract forms, vibrant colors, and gestural brushstrokes. Howard was also the Art Director at the prominent Philadelphia black cultural center the Pyramid Club, where he broke traditional boundaries by exhibiting works by black and white artists together. He participated in the Philadelphia Work Progress Administration’s (WPA) art project, and during his lifetime exhibited at the 1939 New York World’s Fair, the Pennsylvania Academy of the Fine Arts, the Philadelphia Museum of Art, Howard University, and the William Penn Memorial Museum, among other venues. Howard’s work has been collected by multiple institutions including the Philadelphia Museum of Art, the Smithsonian Institution, and the Library of Congress, to name a few.
