Richard Dey de Ribkowsky was born in Bulgaria in 1880, but left at the age of thirteen to study art in Paris. He is best known for his marine paintings, as well as his extensive travel around the globe. After Paris he continued his studies in Florence, Italy and St. Petersburg, Russia, and then went on to Buenos Aires, where he founded the Academy of Beaux Arts in 1904. By 1910 De Ribcowsky had made his way to the United States, traveling throughout the country, and eventually settling in Los Angeles, California in the 1920s.
