William Samuel Horton was born in Grand Rapids, Michigan and raised in North Dakota, but spent most of his career in Paris, where he became a close friend and colleague of the Impressionists, including Claude Monet, Edgar Degas and other notable artists. He first studied at the Art Institute of Chicago as a teenager, and then at The Art Student’s League and the National Academy of Design in New York, and the Ecole des Beaux-Arts in Paris, before marrying and settling permanently in Paris in 1892. He then studied at the Academie Julian, and was a regular exhibitor at the Paris salons, as well as at prestigious galleries in the Eastern U.S.

Horton’s work is resides at the Musee Carnavalet, Paris; The National Museum of Stockholm; the National Museum, Washington, D.C.; Terra Museum, Illinois; Bradford Museum, England; Luxembourg Museum and more.

- scattered craquelure; surface cracks to board; scratches and surface wear to frame.
