Samuel Arlent Edwards was an English artist born in Somerset in 1862. He studied art and architecture at the Kensington Museum Art School, and was later apprenticed at the engraving firm Appleton, Josey, & Alais, where he excelled at the mezzotint engraving process. Edwards moved to New York in 1890, and began work as a book illustrator while perfecting what became his signature process of full-color printing from a single mezzotint plate. His detailed interpretations of old master paintings and portraiture are collected worldwide.
