Born in Rochester, New York, in 1912, Hananiah Harari first studied at the Rochester Memorial Art Gallery, and then at the School of Fine Arts at Syracuse University. He continued his studies in Paris, beginning in 1932, under Andre Lhote, Fernand Leger, and Marcel Gromaire. Upon returning stateside and settling in New York City, Harari became a founding member of the American Abstract Artists, and during the 1930s and 40s worked for the WPA. Despite his involvement with the abstractionists, he was unwilling to give up the natural world as inspiration in favor of pure non-objective pursuits, and eventually he left the group. Harari taught at the both the School of Visual Arts and the Art Students League in New York during the later 20th century. His work resides in the permanent collections of many major institutions including: the Metropolitan Museum of Fine Arts, the Whitney Museum of American Art, the Smithsonian, the Boston Museum of Fine Arts, The Philadelphia Museum of Art, the Yale University Art Gallery and The British Museum, among others.
