Two Tibetan Buddhist Reliquary Pendants, 19th Century
Item Details
Two Tibetan Buddhist gau pendants each holding a tsa tsa of Mahakala. Gau hold sacred objects and function as miniature portable shrines that can be carried or worn as pendants. Contained in each of these is a hand painted tsa tsa, a clay relief either ritually hand shaped or cast from a mold usually with additional herbs, ash, or other ritual additives or verso inscriptions. They are created as part of practicing Dharma and commonly depict aspects of the Buddha but can also show other deities and lamas. These each depict Mahakala, a protector deity.
