Harley Manlius Perkins was born Bakersfield, Vermont and studied at the Brigham Academy and the Boston Museum School. He eventually became the founder of ‘The Boston Five,’ a group of modernist painters. They spent twenty-five years creating expressive landscapes with an emphasis on a fauvist palette. In addition to painting, Perkins held positions as Art Editor of the Boston Transcript, Art Critic for the Boston Evening Traveler, Director of Exhibitions at the Boston Art Club, Radio Art Commentator, and a contributor to The Arts: Pictures on Exhibit. Perkins’ art can be found in permanent collections including the Boston Museum of Fine Art and the Whitney Museum of American Art.
