John Prentiss Benson studied in Paris during the early 1880s before returning to the United States to practice architecture. He designed hospitals, homes, schools, and more, before finally switching to painting. After moving to Maine, his art took on the subjects of marine landscapes, nautical scenes, and beachside portraits. His work is collected by various public and private collectors.
