Walter Blackman received his artistic training initially from Jean-Leon Gerome, but became heavily influenced by Alexander Cabanel after his friend studied under him at Beaux-Arts studio. It was in this way that Blackman was able to create his melodramatic style with a humanizing approach. He later became a member of the Association of American Artists in Paris after finding it difficult to establish himself as an artist in New York. He exhibited for many years abroad before returning to Chicago, Illinois in his later years.

- wear to edges of frame; canvas slightly loose in frame; surface wear present to painting; half inch repair to upper center of painting.
