Item Details

Walter Blackman (American, 1847-1928)
Untitled, late 19th century
Oil painting on canvas
Signed to the upper right

Walter Blackman received his artistic training initially from Jean-Leon Gerome, but became heavily influenced by Alexander Cabanel after his friend studied under him at Beaux-Arts studio. It was in this way that Blackman was able to create his melodramatic style with a humanizing approach. He later became a member of the Association of American Artists in Paris after finding it difficult to establish himself as an artist in New York.
