Born in England in 1879, William Chadwick was raised in Holyoke, Massachusetts. After high school Chadwick moved to New York City to attend the Art Students League where he studied under John H. Twachtman, George Bridgman, and Joseph DeCamp. He then spent a year abroad in Europe though little is known about his sejour. Upon his return to the states Chadwick visited Old Lyme, Connecticut, where he became affiliated with the Impressionist art colony founded in Florence Griswold’s home. The artist, drawn to the rolling landscape, continued to return to Old Lyme and eventually purchased a home there in 1915. Chadwick taught at the Savannah Art School from 1924-1926 where he also exhibited and was a member of National Academy of Design, Salmagundi Club, and the Lyme Art Association.
