Alfred Jensen was born in Guatemala and traveled extensively while working as a ship’s cabin boy. He took this opportunity to draw portraits of the people that he encountered. Jensen studied in Germany under Hans Hofmann, an abstract expressionist painter, and there he met Saidie Adler May, an art collector. He then traveled with May until eventually they ended up in the United States, where he opened his own studio. Jensen’s paintings are characterized by grids of brightly colored geometric forms based on complex systems of thought. His work even became influenced by Pythagorean mathematics and astronomy to ancient Chinese and Mayan calendars.
