In 1998, after a long career as a scientist and with no formal art training, Chris “Chub” Hubbard left it all behind to follow his true calling as an artist. His first step was to join the art car movement of the time and create the ‘Heaven and Hell Car’, a lighthearted exploration of the good and the bad in all of us, and life itself. It incorporated his first primitive carvings of saints, angels and devils that were inspired by his Catholic upbringing and outside folk artist including Howard Finster, Edgar Trolson and R.A. Miller. Due to popular demand he began carving versions of his ‘Heaven and Hell’ pieces that he would sell at art car festivals and parades around the country. Hubbard now resides in Athens, Georgia, and has exhibited his work in numerous east coast galleries, including the American Visionary Art Museum in Baltimore, MD.
