Born in Philadelphia, Edmund Darch Lewis has been regarded as one of the most prolific and successful American landscape artists of the late 19th century. He studied privately with Paul Weber beginning at age fifteen. Highly sought after, Lewis’ work often features scenes of the Lehigh, Susquehana, and Wissahickon Rivers of Pennsylvania, and rural scenes of northeast United States. Many of his marine and landscape paintings include hidden cottages, churning mills, and schooners drifting in calm waters. During his career, Lewis exhibited at the Pennsylvania Academy of the Fine Arts where he was elected an Associate, the National Academy of Design, the Boston Athenaeum, and the Brooklyn Art Association.
