Victor Helou Silver Gelatin Photograph "Maria Callas and Marilyn Monroe"

Item Details

Victor Helou (American, 1931 – 2015)
Maria Callas and Marilyn Monroe

Provenance
From the estate of Milton H. Greene.

Victor Helou was both a theatre and film actor and a photographer. In 1962, he along with thirty other performers were chosen to perform Broadway songs at Madison Square Garden for the birthday of President John F. Kennedy. He brought his camera with him backstage and captured candid photographs of some of the country’s biggest celebrities, including the meeting of Maria Callas and Marilyn Monroe. That night Callas would sing two arias from Carmen, but Marilyn Monroe’s breathy performance of ‘Happy Birthday, Mr. President’ stole the show. This was one of Marilyn Monroe’s last major public appearances before her death in August of that year.
