Kenro Izu studied at the Nihon University College of Art in Tokyo. He moved to New York in 1972 and began work as a photo assistant. After establishing his own studio he specialized in commercial work and still life photography. In 1974, in pursuit of fine art work, he began a trip around the world to photograph Sacred Places. This would become the title of his book in 1979, and would begin a lifelong passion. His travels would take him to Egypt, Syria, Jordan, England, Scotland, France, Mexico, and Easter Island, but he is best known for his work in Southeast Asia, capturing on film the ancient Buddhist and Hindu temples of India, Cambodia, Vietnam, Indonesia, and Burma. In 1996, after one of these trips he founded the non-profit organization Friends Without a Border which raises funds for children’s hospitals and healthcare in Cambodia. He has received several awards both for his photography and philanthropic work including the Lucie Award for Visionary Photographer and the World Children Award.
