Purchased from Sotheby’s New York in the 1970s.

Baron Adolph De Meyer was famed for his celebrity portraits of the early 20th century. His work was published in Alfred Stieglitz’s quarterly publication Camera Work from 1903 to 1907. Upon the outbreak of World War I, De Meyer relocated to New York City and became a photographer for Vogue and Vanity Fair. In 1922, he accepted an offer for a position as chief photographer for Harper’s Bazaar in Paris, and spent the next 16 years there. Over the course of his career, his portraits depicted Luisa Casati, King George V, Queen Mary, Ruth St. Denis, Mary Pickford, Billie Burke, and Rita Lydig, among many others.

- slight curling to edges of photograph; minor silvering discoloration to the upper right corner; item examined outside of the frame; scratches throughout frame.
