Philip Stern was an American photographer, known for his war photography as well as his iconic portraits of Hollywood stars. He was born in Philadelphia in 1919, to Jewish parents who had emigrated from Russia, and moved to the Bronx he was 11. He began working a a photographer for the Police Gazette as an 18 year old before moving to Los Angeles in 1938 to photograph Hollywood for Friday magazine. Stern enlisted in the U.S. Army during WWII, and joined the Darby’s Rangers as a combat photographer, documenting many battles across North Africa and Italy, even after being wounded in action. After the war he returned to Los Angeles where he continued to take pictures of Hollywood for publications including LOOK magazine, Life Magazine and Collier’s. He was responsible for many of the widely recognized images of stars including Marilyn Monroe, James Dean, Marlon Brando, Louis Armstrong and more.
